Your Reverence Brother Pisutr Vapiso,

My name is Atchalee. I’m the mother of Mr.Tanat Sunghataiporn – student of EP 4/1 at Assumption College, Bangrak. When the school opened in May, the first concern my son brought to me was about EP 4/1’s classroom’s size. Students were very surprised, in a better word, hurt, to find their new classroom, as well as EP 4/2 and 4/3, so small. The size looks like a regular classroom divided by half. For 25 students, there can only be 2 rows of tables with 13 & 12 tables each row tightly arranged (see attached photos). Teacher’s area is so narrow that one can hardly turn. Compared with a non-EP regular classroom with space twice the size, although with 50 students, EP 4/1 is even tighter, as teacher’s area is equally dedicated, the rest of the space averaged for students is less.

On school-parents’ meeting day (Sunday – June 10), I with another parent went down the 8th floor to see the real room. We were taken aback and I think this is just impossible. I would never expect to see this size of classroom for one teacher and 25 students in the new Assumption 2003 building. Many other parents have not witnessed this classroom environment because the parents-meet-teacher in homeroom session was cancelled. I had a chance to talk to the homeroom teacher to find out whether this room is just temporary for the interim period while buildings are not yet settled. So we can hope that students will get the space back – maybe next semester. But this is not known. While both teachers and students would say this environment does not negatively affect the learning, it doesn’t have any advantage either. And it is the feeling that’s hurt – as why does it have to be these students who continually get sort of inferiority.

One instance, in case you might not have been aware of, these same students when they were in EP 3 last year, they had complained about the boy scout class. EP 3 last year didn’t have a boy scout class teacher (for all EP 3- that’s 100 students!!). The reason was that the teacher who should have taught them just retired! (I couldn’t believe school’s personnel was also surprised that the teacher reached his retire age and did not prepare a teacher for the students.) The then EP 3 students had to break down in groups to join non-EP classes in a different building for that lesson without seats. Plus, the reaction of those classrooms’ residents was less than welcoming. Most of EP 3 students had to stand during the lessons and many of them ended up loitering about the verandah. Another instance was when school was granted free tickets to attend Siam Niramit for M.3 students, but the tickets were less than all M.3 students, guess who were chosen not to go? All the EP 3. These are a few examples to give you background that pains accumulated. Students already asked themselves what have they done to deserve these. This year comes the room in EP 4.

For the matter, if it is not a temporary arrangement just for this semester, may I beg the floor plan designing personnel to reconsider making an alteration? Can new room be arranged so that these students get the space as most EP students do? We have a huge new library and a huge new auditorium, so I guess it wouldn’t be too hard to do. During the process, can we interchange rooms with students who physically need less space? Says, at the time being, can an EP 6 classroom with only 16 students but occupying a regular size classroom, or EP 1 classrooms with students whose average sizes at their age are half that of EP 4 students, exchange classrooms with EP 4 students? Does this logically sound? Will it hurt their feeling less than ours?

I humbly request your clarification to this matter, and truly appreciate your kind consideration.

Respectfully Yours,

Mrs. Atchalee Sunghataiporn
